IndoJazzWise Double Bill: Shri and Arun Ghosh Band 27th March 2010
The dynamic between jazz and Indian music has inspired a series of ground-breaking collaborations since the 1960s - the explorations of John Coltrane, Joe Harriott, John McLaughlin's adventures with Shakti are just a few.
Tonight's extended set follows a series of London club nights sponsored by Jazzwise magazine in 2008, celebrating how today's generation of British players are breathing new and invigorating life into this fusion of musical worlds.
Clarinetist Arun Ghosh is a charismatic live performer, bringing a snaking, full-on sound and a driving, danceable groove to his "exhilarating, multi-textured, rousing music" (Vortexjazz).
The extraordinary bassist Shri was a key figure in the Asian underground of the 90s, working first with Nitin Sawhney, then with DJ/producer Badmarsh in one of the great bands of its time, Badmarsh and Shri. Since then, he's collaborated with Bugge Wesseltoft and Joanna MacGregor, written for film, dance and theatre, and remixed Asha Bosie for the Kronos Quartet - tonight brings him back to the intensity of live performance in a terrific double bill.
